The Development of VenusGuard: From Innovation to Impact

VenusGuard represents the culmination of more than two decades of dedicated research and development in protective devices designed to prevent sexual assault. Originally introduced as Rape-aXe, the project was born from a commitment to empower women with a discreet, effective, and non-lethal form of protection.

Our design team consists of experienced medical professionals who have invested over 20 years in creating this device. Their expertise has been refined through extensive research and close collaboration with a broad range of specialists. We have incorporated direct feedback from thousands of rape survivors worldwide, as well as insights from convicted offenders, criminologists, law enforcement officers, gynecologists, surgeons, urologists, psychologists, trauma counselors, legal experts, polymer and materials scientists, and design professionals. This comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach has been instrumental in shaping a product that is safe, reliable, and genuinely effective.

All of this foundational work has been carried out on a purely volunteer basis by committed individuals who share a vision of advancing personal safety for women.

To longtime supporters of the initiative: yes, this is the same product lineage you may have followed in earlier years. The original name, while direct and unambiguous, created substantial barriers to media coverage, public discourse, and broader acceptance, precisely when open conversation about sexual assault prevention is most needed. To overcome these challenges and reach the widest possible audience, we made a strategic decision to pursue parallel paths. The VenusGuard brand was developed specifically for markets with strict social media guidelines, AI-driven content moderation, and heightened sensitivity around explicit terminology. This rebranding enables us to engage more effectively with women in Western cultures while respecting platform policies and local community standards.

Our media and creative team also operates on a volunteer basis. We are always eager to welcome fresh ideas and contributions from supporters, content creators, artists, filmmakers, writers, and other talented individuals who want to help amplify this important mission. Whether you can dedicate a few hours a month or more, if you are passionate about prevention, empowerment, and innovative storytelling, we invite you to reach out. Together, we can build something meaningful and far-reaching.

One of the original co-inventors, Sonnet Ehlers, continues to pursue her own important parallel path—promoting and educating about the device under its original name in South Africa and other regions where more direct language is widely accepted.
